Getting hold of a person

Made in the UK by one person. There is no ticketing system and no bot. Email reaches someone who can actually change the app.

Reporting wrong data? Include the number plate and what you expected to see. That is the difference between a guess and a fix.

The things people ask first

Where does the data come from?

The DVSA MOT History service, which is the same record a garage sees. Every test, every failure reason, every advisory, and the mileage on the day.

My car is missing, or the details are wrong.

Motorfile shows the official record and never edits it. A car under three years old has not been tested yet, so there is nothing to show. A detail that is genuinely wrong is wrong at the DVSA and has to be fixed there. You would not want an app that could change it.

Why does the tax date have to be typed in?

The DVLA service that publishes tax dates is closed to new applications. So the app asks you once, then keeps the date right on its own. If it reopens, this becomes automatic.

Is this an HPI check?

No. Motorfile cannot show:

  • Outstanding finance
  • Stolen markers
  • Insurance write-offs

Thorough on MOT and mileage, silent on the rest. Buying a car? Get a provenance check as well.

What does “nearside” mean?

The left-hand side, as you sit in the car. The app translates it, because being sent to the wrong wheel is worse than not being told.

Do I need an account?

No. There is nothing to sign up for and nothing to sign into. Your cars live on your phone.

I got a new phone. Where did my cars go?

Everything is on the device, not a server. If iCloud backup was on — it is unless you turned it off — the app finds your copy on the new phone and offers to restore your vehicles, fill‑ups and records from it. Typing the plate again rebuilds the MOT history instantly, because that comes from the DVSA. Your photographs and documents come back too, from version 1.0.2 onwards — they are in the same backup. A copy made by an older version does not contain them, so if yours is from before that, use the file you exported yourself.

How do I cancel?

In the App Store, under your Apple subscriptions, like any other app. We cannot cancel it for you or see that you have. Cancelling puts you back on Free, which keeps one vehicle — nothing is deleted, and everything you have recorded stays on your phone.
